The Power of Couple Tees

Post 78 of 182

In 2008 I attended a missions conference in Thailand. On my flight back (a direct flight to Korea) I was overwhelmed by all the matching honeymoon couples. Their outfits were coordinated perfectly top to bottom. This picture would be an example of one couple, but only if their socks and shoes were identical too…

I never knew how much this was an Asian thing, or particularly a Korean thing. Sky and I never got to the level of matching as the couple above, but she has definitely enjoyed coordinating our outfits from time to time.

I originally found matching couple outfits a bit bizarre and silly. I never would have thought there would be any power behind them (especially the tacky ones), until I studied clothes in the Bible and also studied the power of soul ties.

Matching outfits are actually very common around the world. Each sports team has special colors and matching uniforms that they wear and that their fans wear. Military personnel each have their own specific uniforms depending on whether they are army, navy, air force, or marines. Judges have their gowns. Policemen have their uniforms, as do fire fighters. Matching outfits symbolize unified identity and purpose. That is powerful!

Revelation 7:9-10 speaks of the end times and reads, “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!'”

In the spiritual realm Christians are all called to be clothed in grace (Isaiah 61:10, Colossians 3:12-14). Our lives should be lived in a way that we stand out to each other. I’m from Virginia Tech university and when I see people wearing a Virginia Tech t-shirt, I have an instant connection with them. I would have never known about that connection if I hadn’t seen their clothes. It should be the same for believers in the spirit.

I’ll admit, I’m no longer ashamed of couples tees or matching outfits. I’m proud of my relationship with Sky and our clothes can stand out a lot more than our wedding bands. My hope is that our relationship will get to such a strong place that people will immediately recognize our love for each other without seeing us in matching outfits. And my hope for my church is that we would also walk in such grace, instilling love, compassion, and strength upon each other, that visitors would immediately recognize the unified identity and purpose among us.

For more about the importance of clothes in the spirit, I’ve copied a recent sermon of mine at the bottom of this post. I thought I’d add a few more goofy couple tee pictures first…
