The Ghosts Are Rather Puny

While living in the orphanage during my first three years in Korea I stayed in a small apartment that happened to be where the home would quarantine sick kids who had chicken pox or pink eye. Often when young kids would have to stay with me they would request that I would leave their door open with the hall light on. They would tell me they’re afraid of ghosts. I would always respond with the same surprise: “Ghosts?! You guys are afraid of ghosts?! Don’t worry. If a ghost tries to come here, this is what I’ll do to it…” and then I would act like a professional wrestler and begin punching and pummeling as if I were beating up the ghost. I would act like I was grabbing it and throwing it to the ground and then stomping on it repeatedly before finally booting it far away. I would then wipe my hands and tell the kids with a little grin, “You have nothing to worry about.” Every kid loved this. They would laugh and then go to bed peacefully with a new frame of mind: JM is bigger and stronger than ghosts and isn’t afraid of them; there is nothing to worry about.

The Bible tells us that we should be aware of the devil and not be ignorant of his schemes. But the Bible never tells us that we should fear the devil or any of his demons. Rather, our focus should be on our big, great, awesome God who is far more glorious and intense than the devil and all his army combined. Even if the devil and all his army were to appear before us with each demon being 20 times larger than any human, they would still be tiny specks before our great God of the universe. The truth is that compared to all the galaxies out there our earth is like a minuscule dust particle that can’t be seen. Satan can never make himself big enough to match with God. There simply is no comparison between the two. In fact, Satan’s end won’t come from Jesus or a huge army of angels or a strong archangel, rather he will be bound and imprisoned by one single, nameless angel (Revelations 20:1-3).

We need to live with the peace and comfort that our great God is far greater than any evil here on earth. He loves us and will protect us. Rather than being afraid, we should be the ones striking fear into the enemy because we are all carriers of His Holy Spirit. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives within us!

Here is a sermon that can help you get a new frame of mind for how big our God is and also for what awaits us in heaven: Sermon – Longing for Heaven.
