Preserving Your Most Precious Book (introducing my wife’s leather by b)

Post 38 of 182

My wife was born with gifted hands. She has a knack for learning different crafts and making beautiful things (see: http://needlesandmouse.blogspot.kr/). She always had a love for leather but only recently was able to take some leather classes. She was a natural and made wallets, a bag, a clutch, and some other neat things. But while she enjoyed making each of them, she found a special joy in rebinding Bibles. And so she started a new Bible rebinding business: leather by b (http://leatherbyb.blogspot.kr/p/about.html).

Here is the story of my Bible…

If there was one book I had to choose to keep out of all the books I own, it would be my Bible. It is the book I’ve read the most, underlined the most, and carried around the most. But sadly because of all the wear and tear my first Bible (NIV84 version) was barely staying together. I’ve bought many other Bibles with different versions, but the NIV84 version is no longer available so I have been protecting this precious Bible as best as possible. Here are a couple pictures of it…

The strap fell off many years ago. The binding also fell apart, so there was some duct tape along the edges keeping it together. One edge wore off and looked like a pet got to it.

But the duct tape can only do so much. Here is what my Bible looked like when you open it up.

Eesh! Some pages were slipping out and the whole book itself was about to rip off of the cheap cover. Whenever I went on mission trips or spoke at churches that use the NIV84, I had to be very careful how I brought it with me. Even the fake leather cover smelled a bit from all it has endured (rain, spills, humidity, etc). It’s still a book I treasured, but I usually kept it safely stored away in my bookshelf and rarely pulled it out.

But now my amazing wife used her talents to make my Bible like new! See the finished product (already a bit worn from use… read your Bible!^^). I wanted it to have a strap like it did before and she made it to perfection.

She also fixed the inside binding so that pages aren’t hanging out anymore. It’s just like new!
